Recovery and rehab at home

If you’ve had surgery or a stay in hospital, we’ll do everything we can to get you back home as soon as possible. That way, you can sleep in your own bed, eat your own food, and enjoy the familiar surroundings of home.

Recovery and rehab at home

Our main aim is to help you regain your health, happiness and mobility.

Our recovery and rehab programs are designed to help speed up your recovery. We can provide you with all the rehab support you’re likely to need, through a combination of remote care, face to face consultations and guided treatments.

I have had multiple operations, the last one being a shoulder replacement. I received physio and a health coach for six months. They have been amazing. I am very happy to belong to CBHS. Thank you for everything.

My husband had a hip replacement in February − we paid nothing for his op and then he received home care nurses and physio. This made recovery ever so easy…

Preparing for surgery

Preparing for surgery

When it comes to surgery, most people tend to focus on what might happen and how they might feel afterwards, not before. We believe ‘rehab’ should start before your operation, because the better prepared you are, the faster and more successful the process is likely to be.

We have ‘pre-hab’ programs that can prepare you for major procedures like joint replacement or cardiac surgery. The program could include physio, nursing support, pain management, sleep hygiene, nutrition and self-care.

When you go into the operating room, we want you to be as ready as you can be.

There are no out-of-pocket expenses for members with an appropriate level of Hospital cover.

Rehabilitation after surgery

Major surgical procedures like hip and knee replacements can require extensive rehab after surgery. This is a key part of your recovery. Rehab is equally important after a major event such as stroke, cardiac surgery and other major surgical procedures.

The more strength you can build up in the muscles around your new joint, the more likely you are to gain normal movement and the sooner you can get back to everyday life. Rehab also helps ease pain and swelling and reduces the likelihood of blood clots.

If you’re a suitable candidate, you may be able to have rehabilitation at home. That means you could leave hospital sooner and complete your recovery at home, avoiding all the hassle of hospital appointments, travel and parking.

“The best part was coming home and having physiotherapy at home.”

“I felt like they cared about me and my progress. I’m 100% improved.”

“Caring support from everyone. Excellent. I feel very well supported. Nice to know that someone cares about my health.”

Physio and occupational therapy

Nursing care

Timing

Physio and occupational therapy

Physiotherapists can visit your home as part of your rehabilitation and deliver exercise programs that are targeted to meet your individual needs. They can help you work towards regaining your strength, balance and mobility and help you manage or prevent fatigue, pain, and muscle stiffness.

Occupational therapists can work with you to assess and reduce any risks there might be in your home. They can also organise and deliver any aids you might need to help you return to normal daily living.

Nursing care

Your rehab program may include nursing care to dress wounds, manage medications and administer drugs or infusions. All our nurses are highly skilled professionals.

Timing

The length of time a program runs will depend on individual needs. A typical program following joint replacement might last 12 weeks. Other programs might only need to run from four to six weeks.

If you’re self-isolating, tele-health rehab programs can run remotely. These programs also include welfare checks and mental health support.

Respiratory rehab

Research has shown that rehabilitation at home has long-term benefits on quality of life in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you need surgery for any form of respiratory disease, you may be able to complete your respiratory rehab at home. The respiratory rehab program is tailored to include education on managing breathlessness and an exercise program to improve lung function. Depending on your circumstances, the program may include a combination of nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, personal care or home support.

Cardiac rehab

Completing a cardiac rehab program after treatment or surgery for a heart condition can help you prevent trips back to hospital and even prevent you dying from your heart condition. Cardiac rehab in the home programs are tailored to include support, exercise programs and education programs on lifestyle changes and diet which can improve your heart health. Your rehab might also include a physical activity program which is customised to suit your individual medical needs.

Joint replacement rehab

As healthcare evolves, it’s now possible for some people to return home soon after having a joint replacement surgery. Sometimes even that same day. Research shows that for straightforward knee arthroscopy procedures, at home rehab is as effective as rehab in hospital.

If you’re looking at a knee or hip replacement, you might be able to take part in the 360KS system, which is a program to help you properly prepare for surgery and then return home for your rehab. Read more about 360KS and how you could participate.

Mental health recovery

Recovery from an acute mental health episode can take time. Mental health issues can also be associated with physical health problems or aggravated by them.

We’ll support you in any way we can as you journey towards more positive mental health and a better quality of life.

“New perspective on life. Incredibly grateful to have you guys listen to me and provide advice. I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t had that.”

Our home-based recovery programs can typically last between four to six months.

Psychologists, mental health nurses and/or health coaches (or a combination of all three) can help with pain management, fatigue, depression, anxiety and substance abuse through a series of mental health coaching sessions by video or telephone.

The team can coordinate with your own GP and other healthcare professionals to advocate on your behalf. They can escalate the level of care if required and guide and support towards making behavioural and lifestyle changes that can contribute to more positive mental health.
